CBS News Bay Area KPIX ICON Award Honors Wei E & Claire Hubel of The United Effort Organization

During National Volunteer Week (April 19–25, 2026), CBS News Bay Area recognized Wei E and Claire Hubel with its ICON Award for Outstanding Community Service.

While we are honored by this recognition, the award shines a light on something even more important: homelessness can happen to anyone — and community support changes lives.

Homelessness often doesn’t look the way people expect. Behind every story is a neighbor who may have lost a job, faced a health crisis, or encountered a moment of instability. 

With the right support, people can rebuild their lives.

We see that transformation every day.

Charlie’s story is one example. Through guidance, mentorship, and persistent support, she regained confidence, secured housing and employment, and built a path toward stability. Once a client, then a volunteer, Charlie is now an employee helping others rebuild their lives.

That belief in human potential is at the heart of The United Effort Organization. Founded in 2020 by three volunteers, our mission is grounded in a simple idea: everyone deserves dignity and a real opportunity to move from crisis to stability.

As a largely volunteer-driven organization, we work to fill critical gaps in the system for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness — including seniors, people with disabilities, and individuals facing chronic health challenges. Our volunteers provide mentorship, housing navigation, resource coordination, and practical support with compassion and persistence.

Since 2020, our team has grown, supported more than 2,100 individuals and helped over 220 people secure housing. Thousands more have accessed our free online tools and resources, including our Affordable Housing Database, Benefits Eligibility Screening Tool, and Find Shelter search — all developed and maintained by volunteers to expand access across Santa Clara County.

This recognition belongs to every volunteer, donor, partner, and community member who believes people deserve a chance to rebuild.
